Champions-of-the-Month

Bank of Canada, a federal government agency that implements Canada’s monetary policies.

Recently, the Bank faced a tough challenge. Our website runs on high-end servers that handle regular traffic without difficulty. But a number of times a year – for instance, when interest rate changes are announced or Canada Savings Bonds campaigns are launched – we experience massive spikes in traffic which overload our server resources. Rather than invest large amounts in additional hardware and software, the Bank of Canada hired Carbon60 to solve the problem. Carbon60 recommended that the Bank implement a content distribution network (CDN) and worked with us to get our web content integrated with a content delivery network. Carbon60 helped determine the optimal caching strategies for various content types and took care of the actual configuration and administration of the CDN account. The outcome for the Bank of Canada has been extremely positive. During our most recent interest-rate announcement the Bank’s servers scarcely registered a huge surge in traffic. The CDN service handed virtually all end-user requests and overseas users saw better-than-usual response times. By working with Carbon60 the cost to the Bank has been much lower than adding more hardware would have been.

“The other day, we required several domains to be registered immediately for a new TLD (Top-Level Domain). However, our registrar would not allow immediate registration of the new TLD unless we could prove a variety of factors pertaining to our business type and domain trademarks. We got hung up on the complexities of the TLD registration process so Jason spent extra time putting together documentation and speaking with the Registrar on our behalf to resolve the roadblock. We’re grateful for the extra effort Jason put in to keep our the project on track. Thanks again Jason.”
