Edge Caching Services

  • Majority of website content is cached on Akamai’s edge network. This dramatically reduces page load times for end users – particularly if they are not close to the hosting origin – and reduces the load on hosting origin(s). A 30% average reduction in page load times and 80% off-loading of traffic from the origin(s) is typical for most websites
  • Tiered distribution where content from the origin is cached on a second tier of edge servers that serve requests from a first tier of edge servers. Using this second tier of servers for caching and serving content further enhances performance and reduces the load on your origin
  • Granular, on-the-fly control over what is cached and the time to live (TTL) of cached objects
  • Last mile acceleration selectively compresses content before delivery to the end user from edge network. Is configurable for html, javascripts, style sheets, and custom content type such as text/xml
  • Advanced caching controls accommodate complex site configuration. Cache key customization enables more content to be cached through advanced cookie handling, redirect handling, and header handling as well as standard url-type caching controls

Edge Routing Services

  • Best path routing of http/s requests between edge network and hosting origin(s) to avoid Internet bottlenecks. This reduces site latency and load times for end-users particularly where there are weak peering relationships between ISPs (as in Canada)
  • Smart routing of http/s requests to one or more hosting origins based on multiple criteria, such as:
  • Responsiveness of hosting origins as determined by standard web server response codes
  • Geographic origin (country, city, latitude and longitude, more) of requesting IP address
  • Device type of requester
  • Browser or OS version used by requester
  • Network connection type or actual connection speed of requester
  • Alerting, log delivery and reporting options

 Edge Network and Security Services

  • Denial of Service Protection – Edge network services shield the hosting origin(s) by “cloaking” their IPs from public knowledge and only forwarding well formed HTTP/S requests. This actively eliminates the threat of network-layer DoS attacks directly against the origin’s hosting infrastructure. Moreover, the massive scalability of the edge network actively shields the origin(s) against spikes in application-level (http/s) denial of service attacks by offloading targeted content.
  • SSL Certificates – Site, wildcard, and SAN SSL certificates are hosted on edge network to provide secure delivery of encrypted (HTTPS) content

 Edge Storage Services

  • Distribute storage of static web objects closer to end users
  • NetStorage files are geographically replicated based on proprietary mapping and routing algorithms and stored at optimal locations globally to reduce end-user download times
  • Increases redundancy level for websites when used in conjunction with failover solutions
